Tonic
The fundamental note of a key — the resting point of the scale.
The tonic is the fundamental note of a key, the one that gives the scale its name and serves as its final resting point. In C major it is C; in A minor it is A. Every other degree of the scale is organised in relation to it: the dominant (fifth degree) creates tension, the tonic resolves it. Recognising the tonic by ear is the first musical reflex to develop in order to understand a song.
