Subdominant
Fourth degree of a scale — gently leads away from the tonic.
The subdominant is the fourth degree of a scale. In C major it is F; in A minor it is D. It plays a role of leading away from the tonic, creating a slight imbalance that resolves either directly or via the dominant. The I-IV-V-I progression (tonic-subdominant-dominant-tonic) is the backbone of the vast majority of pop, folk and blues repertoire.
