Resolution

Resolution is the return from musical tension to a state of stability. The classical resolution moves from the dominant (V) to the tonic (I): that is what creates the satisfaction of a phrase ending. A resolution can be direct (V → I), delayed (V → another chord before I), or deliberately avoided to create suspense. Mastering resolutions is one of the markers of advanced musical writing.
