Hammer-on

Making a note sound by hammering the string with a finger.

A hammer-on is a technique consisting of making a note sound by quickly striking the string with a left-hand finger, without a new attack from the right hand. The starting note is played normally; the next finger 'hammers' a higher fret to bring out the next note. Hammer-on and its opposite, the pull-off, are the foundation of legato playing on guitar and enable fast, fluid passages.
