Chord inversion
Chord whose lowest note is not its root.
An inversion is a chord whose lowest note is not its root. A C major chord in root position has C in the bass; its first inversion has E in the bass, its second inversion has G in the bass. Inversions let you create melodic bass lines between chords, avoid overly large jumps, and add fluidity to progressions. Notated C/E or C/G in modern notation.
